Welcome to The Joy of Technology

Personal technology, like your telephone, television, music, and computer, can do great things for you. It can also be incredibly annoying, frustrating, and confusing.

Add to that the rate at which things change, and a lot of bad information, broken promises, and poor customer service, and no wonder normal people who just want things to work end up flinging their cellphone against the wall or throwing a brick through their TV.

I'm going to try to provide the right amount of information to let you take control of your technology, and navigate your way through the maze. I'd like to do this collaboratively, by answering your questions, as well as by providing informative posts.

Feel free to ask away! I'll try to post something here daily to seed the discussion.

A little bit about myself:

I am a boomer-generation computer nerd. My day job is a software designer/architect for IBM. On the side, I try to understand all the personal technology I come in contact with.

I talk quite a bit to family and friends about that technology, giving advice, trying to solve problems, and generally trying to help. I thought it might be useful to spread this to the Internet via a blog.

Personally, I have:

  • Telephones:
    • Cingular Wireless (now AT&T Wireless) with 4 cellphones
    • AT&T CallVantage VoIP with 3 cordless phones
    • AT&T Local Phone Service with 5 cordless phones
  • Televisions:
    • Sharp Aquos 53" LCD
    • Panasonic 32" CRT
    • Time Warner Cable Digital Service
  • Music/Audio:
    • Sony DG600 Audio Receiver with 3.1 speakers
  • Computers:
    • 6 homebuilt computers in the house, 1 more at my daughter's.
    • Plus my IBM-issued laptop
    • My life is recorded and run from my Palm TX PDA
  • Networks:
    • AT&T Yahoo! Elite DSL
    • Wireless and wired Ethernet throughout the house
